One of the prime objectives of the meeting
involved the handing over of wireless system to Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary.
The Sanctuary (GWS) is situated in eastern Assam (26º40’-26º45’ N and 94º20’ -
94º25' E) and is regarded as one of the important protected areas in India for
conservation of primate diversity. GWS is the only protected area where 7 out
of 9 primate species of Northeast India reside. The GWLS (recognized in the
year 1997 by the Assam Forest Department) encompasses an area of 20.98 km2.
However, the most intricate problem was a total lack of communication system
within the sanctuary range until 4 of June 2005.
Meanwhile, Aaranyak with the support from
Rufford Foundation, UK, donated 5 wireless handsets, 1 base station and 1
motorbike to the authorities of Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary for strengthening
up the protection measures of endangered wildlife in and within the vicinity
of the sanctuary. The electronic equipments were received by Mr. S. K. Srivastava, Conservator of Forests, Eastern Assam Circle on behalf of the
Forest Department. Mr. Srivastava conveyed his appreciation to Aaranyak for
providing them the equipments and furthermore illustrated the tremendous
necessity of wireless system inside the sanctuary. Mr Zaman, Assistant
Conservator of Forests, Jorhat and Mr. Joyram Baruah, Range Officer, Gibbon
Wildlife Sanctuary were also present on the special occasion. Aaranyak took a
major step forward by providing the sanctuary authorities with wireless
communication network that was an outmost requirement for the existence of
the sanctuary. |
