Sponsors Raincoats to Pabitora WLS

28th July 2006: Aaranyak, a society for biodiversity
conservation in North East India, along with the UK based The David Shepherd
Wildlife Foundation, has offered 110 rain coats to all the forest staff of
Pabitora Wildlife Sanctuary of Assam today. A brief ceremony on this occasion
was held at the Range office of the Pabitora Wildlife Sanctuary, Mayong today
where in the Hon’ble forest and tourism minister of Assam, Mr. Rockybul
Hussain has graced the meeting as the chief guest.
The
Divisional Forest Officer of Guwahati Wildlife Division, Mr. Surojit Dutta
has delivered the welcome note to all the dignitaries at the meeting. Mr. M.C.
Malakar, the Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), Assam has apprised the
Forest Minister the various conservation needs of the Pabitora sanctuary in
the meeting. Mr. Rockybul Hussain, the Forest and Tourism Minister of Assam
has lauded the gesture of Aaranyak to sponsor the raincoats to the frontline
staff of Pabitora sanctuary. In his speech, the minister has said that in
next 15 days, a joint team of Assam Forest Department and Tourism Department
would visit Pabitora to find the out the infra-structure requirements of the
sanctuary to cater the need of tourist. He has emphasized the need to enhance
tourism in Pabitora as the site is very near to Guwahati. On a memorandum
submitted by the casual labours of the Pabitora Sanctuary, Mr. Hussain has
mentioned that the casual labours joined the forest department before 1993
will be regularized in next few months time. He has encouraged the forest
staff at Pabitora to exercise their duties for the betterment of rhinos and
other species in the sanctuary.
Earlier,
Dr. Bibhab Kumar Talukdar, the secretary general of Aaranyak has mentioned
the various other initiatives the NGO has taken in Pabitora sanctuary that
includes a GIS based map on the rhino straying out of the sanctuary. He has
mentioned that besides the raincoats, Aaranyak would sponsor wireless
equipments to Pabitora sanctuary in the coming winter to enhance wireless
communication network within and outside the sanctuary. He has mentioned that
Aaranyak is also sponsoring an anti-poaching motorized boat in Pabitora
sanctuary in next few weeks time to enhance patrolling in the river front and
wetlands. Besides, the boat would be used by the forest staff to rescue
wildlife, forest staff and fringe villagers during the high flood. Md. Firoz
Ahmed and Mr. Ashok Dey of Aaranyak were also present at the ceremony. |
