Aaranyak-Rufford Small Grants >> Title of the Project: Sustainable Biodiversity Conservation at Shankarghola through Capacity building and Setting up of an experimental plot.
Project Investigator: Bora Ananta Project objectives: 1. To encourage alternate livelihood through training on production and use of edible mushroom, vermi-compost and bamboo. 2. To accelerate the process of biodiversity conservation through community participation by attracting people from nearby villages through the training programmes. 3. To share know how of growing and nursing economic plants like bamboo and food plants of Golden Langur through an experimental plot. Project Update (June 2007):
The local community has offered a plot of community land to establish the experimental plot as a warm welcome to the project. The plot (app. 0.5 ha) was cleared, bamboo fenced and a sign board was erected. One mushroom house has been constructed with bamboo & thatch. Two training programmes were held for three villagers- Shankarghola, Manikjhora and Borghuli. Mushroom spawns were freely supplied to the trainees and demand started increasing after a successful harvest by a number of the trainees. Suitable strain of earthworm for vermin-composting has been collected from Assam Agricultural University. Infrastructure required for model vermi-compost site is constructed and getting ready for demonstration and training. Nursery shade for bamboo and food plants of Golden Langur is constructed and polypots for nursery are being prepared.
