Aaranyak Small Grants for Nature Conservation in Northeast India

Rapid Response Grants >>

Title of the Project: Protection and Awareness on Gharial, a Critically Endangered species in Goalpara district, Assam.

Project Investigator: Raju Das, Nature's Foster

Project objectives:

Primary objective of this project is to protect the critically endangered Gharials that were sighted recently in the area through awareness and monitoring movement of the animals.

Project Update (June 2007):

This grant aims to make the people aware about protection and conservation of Gharial which has almost disappeared from Assam. A recent sighting of Gharial by the villagers in Jinjiram river has prompted to initiate and fund this grant. Unless people are made aware that the Gharial is not dangerous to them unlike other crocodile, villagers are ready to kill it. This initiative will continue till December 2007. The Gharial Conservation Alliance has matched this grant equally to make its total budget GBP 500.
